My book won a special award!
During my darkest moments, I turned to art journaling, not just to heal myself but to support others as well. I’m thrilled to share that my book, The Hospice Doctor’s Widow: A Journal, has been recognized with a Silver Nautilus Award for its impact. My gratitude for this journey is beyond words.
April 16th is an important day
In a recent conversation, I challenged a health coach who claimed that 90% of illnesses are preventable. While a healthy lifestyle is crucial, we can't ignore that death is part of life. With National Healthcare Decisions Day approaching, it’s vital to understand the importance of Advance Care Planning and documenting your wishes.
True Story: What Would You Do?
A friend has been caring for her husband Fred, who suffered a stroke and is now facing kidney failure. After years of change, she's at a crossroads. Should she opt for dialysis to prolong his life or choose comfort care as they face the end together? It’s a heart-wrenching decision that many deal with.
Recognizing Recurrent Totems
A few years back, I attended a lecture that inspired me to explore the symbols in my own art. For decades, hearts and butterflies have appeared in my work, which at first made me uneasy. However, researching their meanings revealed deep connections to my life, making me curious about how our experiences shape the symbols we love.
On Relishing Rejection
I’ve always found rejection oddly thrilling. Each rejection email is like a little validation of my courage to submit. Recently, I was excited when my personal essay was accepted for publication after a long wait. It felt amazing to overcome doubt and see my work resonate with others.
Thoughts on using "and" instead of "but"
Lately, I've been realizing how much isolation has made me overthink. I've started replacing “but” with “and” in my thoughts, like “I am happy and struggling.” This shift feels empowering and helps me connect better with others. It inspires me to embrace life’s complexities instead of simplifying them.
A Special Note for National Caregiver Month
I often feel overwhelmed by this pandemic, just like many caregivers do every day. With November being National Caregiver Month, it’s a perfect time to recognize the 53 million family caregivers in the U.S. If you know a caregiver, consider reaching out with a small, thoughtful gesture to show your support.
Messages of Thanks
Recently, I received heartfelt messages from readers of my art journal, The Hospice Doctor’s Widow: A Journal. One caregiver shared how my book inspired her to connect with her partner emotionally. I’m excited to announce a virtual program this Saturday with the Six Bridges Book Festival to discuss the book and art journaling!
Introducing Memento Mori
I’m not gonna lie, making and keeping connections has been vital for me, a childless widow navigating isolation. I've noticed distant friendships, rediscovered old ones through meaningful chats, and even formed new bonds online. It’s a journey of renewal and letting go, and I hope you're finding your connections too.
