For Caregivers

At any time in the last 12 months, has anyone in your household provided unpaid care to a relative or friend 18 years or older to help them care for themselves?

This may include helping with personal needs or household chores. It might be managing a person’s finances, arranging for outside services, or visiting regularly to see how they are doing. This adult need not live with you.

If the answer to this question is “yes,” you are a family caregiver, and you are not alone. In the US, 1 in 5 adults are serving as family or uncompensated caregiver for another adult. You may be thinking, “I am the daughter,” “I am the spouse,” “I am the friend,” of course I am going to take care of my … as though it is no big deal. I have done it for my mother, my husband, and my father and it is a big deal. Family caregiver is one of the toughest, uncompensated, most fulfilling positions most of us will be called upon to do. The average duration of family caregiving is 4.9 years and at the end of the caregiving our care recipient dies, and we transition from caregiver to griever.
